"Mansa-mar" – hunting-fishing base (Arkhangelsk area)
Nowadays fishing tourism and hunting have become more popular. Active leisure, fishing, travels have become style of life. How to choose and what to prefer, where to go to rest this year? Since summer 2002 here, in the Russian North, in the Nenets autonomous region, on the river Volonga a new fishing-hunting camp for tourists is functioning. What makes this area so remarkable? The Nenets autonomous region is situated in the north-east of the Arkhangelsk region and almost the whole region, except an extreme south-west, is behind the Polar circle. More than 4/5 of its square is tundra with permafrost. It gives a special exotic tint to a journey. But the main thing is nature untouched by civilization, peculiarities of local flora and fauna, crystal purity of water, unprecedented variety of salmon fish. The river Volonga is a part of such nature.
There are 19 kinds of fish – a salmon, salmon trout, Arctic loach, white salmon, a humpback salmon, umber, omul, peled, and white-fish in the river. Undoubtedly, salmon is of greater interest for fishing-fanciers. The industrial fishing of Atlantic salmon (salmon) has been stopped in 80th years. According to the data of the Polar scientific-research institute Sev PINRO, the average weight of salmon is 5,5 kg. The maximum weight of caught salmon is 18 kg. The main trump of the river is „silver” salmon during the whole fishing period. The base is situated on the bank of the river Volonga, at a distance of 14 km from creek. The placement of the base has been chosen not by chance. It is connected with the fact that the base is situated at a distance of 7 km from the zone of ebb and flow: all fish which rises upwards on the river, passes through the base.
The base is inaccessible by usual types of transport. One can reach this marvelous region only by helicopter. The flight to the base on the river Volonga takes 2 hours and 30 minutes. The helicopter takes off from Arkhangelsk and lands directly at the base. The base is located between numerous rifts and reaches, both up-stream and downstream, the distance can be over passed without burdening oneself with walking. Availability of the cross-country vehicle – amphibian „ARGO” at the base allows moving quickly along the river, and crossing the river with convenience, that greatly increases the opportunities of the fisherman. The experienced guide-instructor will always suggest you the perspective places of fishing. The professional cook will prepare breakfast, dinner and supper – buffet for you, taking into account the wishes of the group, including preparation of dietary dishes.
The base is electrified. The accommodation is in the double small summer houses equipped by all necessary equipment (chairs, beds, lockers, heaters, etc.). In the base one can also find a shower with hot water, a bath, and perfectly equipped kitchen with fireplace, carrying out the functions of a mess-room, where all the tourists gather to watch TV, discuss plans for tomorrow or just call their relatives by satellite phone.
In his article „Beyond the silver autumn”, which you can read in the magazine „Fisherman-Elite” No. 6, 2002 the journalist Sergey Smolnikov speaks of the base on the river Volonga: „Having settled in the double small houses, we got acquainted with comfortable equipment of the base. It must be admitted, I am surprised – a dining room with perfectly equipped kitchen, satellite TV and phone, a shower and other „facilities” here, at the world's end, at today's prices for the helicopter: however!...”.
There is an opportunity to carry on hunting for polar wolf, glutton in the trans-polar region in winter, and at the same time, to feel charm of ice-fishing of trophy specimens of perch, roach, pike in the lakes, and umber, salmon trout, loach, and salmon in the river.
