About Ural

History.

The Cheliabinsk Region was formed on January 17, 1934. The administrative division of the territory of the Region began in the 18th century. In its present boundaries the Cheliabinsk Region has been existing since February 6, 1943.

In September of 1736 on the right bank of river Miass there was found the Cheliabinsk fortress by colonel A.I. Tevkelev. Since 1743 Cheliabinsk had been the center of Iset province; from 1796 to 1919 Cheliabinsk was one of the districts in Orenburg gubernia (province). In 1781 Cheliabinsk got the status of city and was conferred upon the city emblem (heaped dromedary in the lower part of the blazonry). The proper Cheliabinsk Gubernia (area) was found in 1919 year except Zlatoust uyezd (district) that was attached to the Cheliabinsk region in 1923 only. In 1924 Cheliabinsk Gubernia was abolished but on that ex-territory there were established Cheliabinsk, Zlatoust, Troitsk, Verkhneuralsk districts included into the Ural area. In 1934 the Cheliabinsk region got proper official status independent Ural area according to the new administrative division planning of the country. The boundaries of the region had been much wider until the Kurgan region was out of its composition.

Settlements.

There are 30 cities, 30 industrial settlements and 1257 rural settlements in the Cheliabinsk Region.

The region is composed of 24 administrative districts and 23 regional towns (15 towns administering one’s own territory) and 7 towns of local importance. Besides, Cheliabinsk and Magnitogorsk includes 10 municipal districts. Ozersk, Snezhinsk and Trekhgorny are officially recognized the youngest towns in region. These towns have the status of restricted administrative settlements.

The population of the Cheliabinsk Region by 01.01.2002 is 3634 thousand people. The majority of the population (81.5%) resides in regional cities.

Cities.

 Cheliabinsk is the center of the Region. It is situated at the distance of 1919 km from Moscow. The population of Cheliabinsk is 1.108,1 million people.

Other big cities of the Cheliabinsk Region are: Magnitogorsk – 428,8 thousand people, Zlatoust – 198,0 thousand people, Miass – 178,8 thousand people.

Districts.

There are 24 districts on the territory of the Region. The biggest ones are: Bredinsky – 5076 sq. km.; Troitsky – 4591 sq. km.; Kisilsky – 4413 sq. km.; Oktyabrsky – 4356 sq. km.
